Kuje prison in Abuja was engulfed by fire on Friday morning.
The fire reportedly started around 10:45 am, at the prison’s clinic.
Spokesman of Kuje prison, Humphrey Chukwuedo, confirmed the incident but stated that no life was lost in the fire.
“It is not so much of an issue. It has been brought under control. The fire started at 4:30pm in the clinic of the prison.
No inmate or staff was injured and an investigation will launched to know the cause of it.”
Meanwhile, a group named the Prisoners Against Injustice in Nigeria (PAIN) has claimed responsibility for the fire, SaharaReporters reports.
They reportedly made the claim in a handwritten statement posted on the prison notice board before it was removed by the prison authorities.
According to the group, the fire was made to notify the world of the poor state of Nigerian prison and corruption within prison services.
The group also spoke against the prison clinic saying non functional equipments are kept there to deceive visitors.
